Many leaders arrive at their first coaching engagement with a mixture of curiosity and scepticism. Some have been referred by their organisation. Others have sought coaching independently after recognising a gap between where they are and where they want to be. Whatever brings you to coaching, understanding what the process actually involves — and what it doesn't — will help you make the most of the investment.
Coaching is not consulting. A coach does not tell you what to do. It is not therapy — though it may touch on deeply personal beliefs and patterns. It is not mentoring, where an experienced practitioner shares their own path. And it is certainly not a quick fix. Executive coaching is a structured, evidence-based process designed to help you develop the self-awareness, strategic thinking, and behavioural flexibility to lead at a higher level.
A rigorous coaching engagement begins with a comprehensive assessment. This typically includes a detailed intake conversation, 360-degree feedback from colleagues and direct reports, and psychometric tools such as EQ 2.0 or leadership style assessments. The goal is to build a clear, honest picture of your current leadership profile — strengths, blind spots, and development priorities.
Based on the assessment, you and your coach will co-create a set of specific, measurable coaching goals. These might include improving executive presence, developing a more strategic communication style, building a high-performing team, or navigating a specific leadership transition. Clear goals are essential — they provide direction and a basis for measuring progress.
Sessions are typically 60–90 minutes, held every two to three weeks. Each session combines reflection on recent experiences, exploration of underlying patterns, and the development of specific strategies and commitments. Between sessions, you will be working — practising new behaviours, gathering feedback, and building new habits.
Effective coaching is challenging. You will be asked to examine assumptions you have never questioned, to sit with uncertainty, and to experiment with behaviours that may feel uncomfortable at first. You will also experience moments of genuine insight — the kind of clarity that comes from being truly seen and challenged by a skilled, objective partner. Most clients describe their coaching engagement as one of the most significant professional investments they have ever made.
